When you want an answer, it’s tempting to ask AI:
“What’s the answer?”
But good research usually starts with a better question.
Start With the Question
Compare these two questions:
“Tell me about electric cars.”
and:
“What are the advantages and disadvantages of an electric car for someone who drives 15,000 kilometres a year and cannot charge at home?”
The second question gives the research a purpose.
It tells AI what you’re actually trying to understand.
AI Can Help You Ask Better Questions
Sometimes you don’t know enough about a subject to know what to ask.
That’s okay.
You could say:
“I’m considering electric vehicles for our company fleet. What questions should I research before making a decision?”
Now AI isn’t giving you the final answer.
It’s helping you work out what you need to find out.
That’s a valuable research skill.
Don’t Confuse a Starting Point With Proof
AI can help you:
- understand an unfamiliar subject
- explain terminology
- identify areas to investigate
- suggest different viewpoints
- organise your research
But remember:
AI giving you information doesn’t automatically make that information reliable.
When something matters, check it.
Go to the Source
If AI gives you an important fact, ask:
Where did this come from?
Then, where possible, check the original source.
Be particularly careful with:
- numbers
- dates
- research findings
- legal information
- financial information
- information that may have changed recently
The more important the decision, the more carefully you should check.
Ask AI to Challenge You
Research shouldn’t only confirm what you already believe.
Try asking:
“What assumptions am I making?”
Or:
“What might someone who disagrees with me say?”
Or:
“What important question haven’t I considered?”
AI can help you look at the subject from another angle.
Let’s Make It Practical
Choose a question you genuinely want to investigate.
Instead of asking AI for the final answer, ask it to help you build a research plan.
Ask for:
The main question
Smaller questions
Useful types of sources
Different viewpoints
Possible gaps
Then investigate those areas.
Keep asking:
What does the evidence actually say?
And:
What am I interpreting from that evidence?
What You’ve Learned
AI can be a useful research partner.
It can help you ask better questions, structure your investigation and challenge your assumptions.
But it shouldn’t become a shortcut around research.
Sometimes the next challenge isn’t finding information.
It’s working out what to do with the information you have.
That’s where we go next..
